Research projects

Slims Consulting has the experience and expertise to carry out tailored and bespoke research to suit clients' specifications in both the public or private sectors.

Mapping of skills and training interventions in the Life Sciences in Scotland

Slims Consulting was jointly commissioned by Skills Development Scotland and Scottish Enterprise to develop a cost-effective approach to mapping the skills and training landscape for Life Sciences in Scotland. We identified the key stakeholders in the sector and mapped their relationships with each other. The maps were supported by a comprehensive database which detailed the courses and training support on offer and provided links to further information. The project also included a comparative study of the Life Sciences training landscape in Denmark.

South of Scotland Knowledge Transfer Audit

Borders College, Dumfries and Galloway College and Scottish Enterprise commissioned Slims Consulting to assess the capabilities of the colleges to engage in Knowledge Transfer (KT) activities. This work audited the KT potential of the existing facilities and staff in each college and mapped these on to key sectors of the South of Scotland economy. Using this information, we suggested ways in which the colleges could increase their KT engagement with local businesses.

Job losses in Small and Micro-Businesses

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) commissioned Slims Consulting to carry out research into the challenges facing small businesses during the recession. This research was widely published by the FSB and was also presented to the Scottish Parliament. The full study can be viewed on the FSB website. www.fsb.org.uk

Analysis of Scottish Enterprise’s account management support

This qualitative study was commissioned by Scottish Enterprise (SE) to analyse the economic impact of its account management programme. The study involved in-depth consultation with 30 account managed companies to explore the factors which made a positive difference to each company's performance. Interviews were carried out with 15 ‘pairs’ of companies broadly matched by key sector and urban/rural location. The findings have helped SE better understand the dynamics of how they can best help companies to grow.
